Central Park

This custom tour, given by an experienced Central Park Conservancy guide, will be a step-by-step exploration of the thinking that went into designing and creating Central Park, the first purpose-built public park in the United States. We'll begin at Hunter’s Gate, the entrance at 81st Street and Central Park West. After walking through what was once Seneca Village and the remnants of the footings of an enormous reservoir, we’ll climb up to Belvedere Castle, then amble back down through the Ramble, a “naturalistic” woodland meant to provide an escape from the stresses of urban life. Along the way, we'll see how landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux played with the picturesque, pastoral, and formal design traditions before crossing Bow Bridge to end our tour.

This tour will take between ninety minutes and two hours. There will be steep steps going up to the castle and down into the Ramble.

Catherine Fredman ’80 is a ghostwriter who has collaborated on six bestselling leadership-strategy books and memoirs. She was a volunteer tour guide with the Central Park Conservancy for twelve years. Despite living in New York for most of her life, she still finds new things to discover and delight in in the park.
