In 1990 the Bidwell House Museum opened its doors to share the story of the Rev. Adonijah Bidwell and his family, and through them, the story of life in the 18th century Berkshire Hills. Through personal, small-group tours, visitors to the Museum will learn about the architecture of the house, the history of the Bidwell Family and information on  housewares and decor in 18th century New England.

The Museum is set on 194 acres of grounds and gardens that are open year-round. There are hiking trails, a heritage vegetable garden, a pollinator garden and a Native American Interpretive Trail to educate visitors about the local Mohican people who used this land for many centuries for hunting and maple sugaring.

Naumkeag photos

Naumkeag, a 48-acre architectural masterpiece is, at its heart, a family home. In 1884, Joseph Choate, a prominent New York attorney and U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain, and his wife, Caroline, hired the famous architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White to design a summer retreat. The result was a 44-room shingle-style home, where several generations of the Choate family lived until daughter Mabel Choate bequeathed it to The Trustees in 1958.

Afternoon garden tour of Naumkeag, 5 Prospect Hill Rd, Stockbridge, MA 01262

Hour-long guided Garden Tour will be offered at 2:00 p.m.

The first and second floors of the house will be open for self-guided touring.

NOTE:  Due to the age of the site and its steep and uneven terrain, Naumkeag is not ADA compliant and is not wheelchair – or stroller – accessible.  However, there are accessible parking spaces at the front of the house, an accessible bathroom, and many parts of the garden and first floor of the house can be seen regardless of mobility issues.  /  Dogs are not allowed on the property.
