Join Us, Tuesday, December 5 at 3:00 PM ET Reading Archives Against the Grain
We are delighted to invite Allison Mills, Bryn Mawr College Archivist, who will discuss the history of archives as an institution, exploring the relationship between power and the historical record. Through this lens, she will explore how women do and do not appear in archives to suggest that feminist and decolonial research methodologies offer alternate readings of what were once considered “objective” records of the past.
Allison Mills has worked as Bryn Mawr College’s College Archivist since 2019. Originally from Canada, she received Master of Library and Information Science, Master of Archival Studies, and Master of Fine Arts degrees from the University of British Columbia.
At Bryn Mawr, Allison stewards both the historical and current records of the College, working with students, faculty, and staff across disciplines to ensure the preservation of Bryn Mawr’s many diverse histories. She sits on the President’s College History Advisory Group, on the Impact Center Fellowship Committee, and is an advisor and coordinator for the on-going Who Built Bryn Mawr? program.
Allison sits on the Board of Directors for the Philadelphia Area Consortium of Special Collections Libraries and is Chair of the Communications Committee. She has published on questions of ownership in archives and won the Association of Canadian Archivists’ Gordon Dodds Prize for her work on intellectual property rights and ethnographic sound recordings.
