The Marriage Portrait: A Novel by Maggie O’Farrell. 2022, 353 pages
The Marriage Portrait, based on a true story, takes place in the 1550’s in Florence. The heroine, a very young member of the Medici family, is forced, for political reasons, to marry a much older man in the d’Este family. The book is a portrait of a resilient young woman’s battle for survival. (By the way, Maggie O’Farrell also wrote Hamnet, which was read previously by the group).
